Blue Beard: A Tale of Domestic Violence

The folktale Blue Beard has an underlying theme of domestic violence by showing potential warning signs.

The tale of "Blue Beard" is definitely a tale of domestic violence which higlights the risk factors for a domestic abuser. In addition, the tale gives readers important tips on what they should if they are victims of domestic violence.

Insecurity

One common characteristic of a domestic abuser is insecurity. Individuals who physically harm their partners have insecurities about themselves and fear that their partners would leave them for better mates. In the tale of Blue Beard, the title character's insecurity was his blue beard and it was mentioned in the tale that one of the reasons many women did not want to marry Blue Beard was because of the color of his beard.

Financial Superiority

Blue beard was very wealthy but despite his wealth none of the women wanted to marry him. Blue beard obviously had more money than the woman he was able to marry. One risk factor of domestic violence is when one partner has more money than the other partner or is the sole bread winner. It is important to realize that just because someone has money doesn't make that person an abuser but when someone lacks funds then that person is most likely to stay in an abusive relationship.

Constant Control

One characteristic of a domestic abuser is being a "control freak." Abusers wants to be in control of their partners constantly even when their partners are not in their presence. When Blue Beard was about to go on his journey he instructed his wife not to go in the forbidden room. Blue Beard wanted to control his wife even when she was not in his presence. He was a very selfish character, he went imposed demands on his wife yet she could not impose any demands on him. When the wife defied Blue Beard's orders and went into the forbidden room she was shocked from what she saw with all of the dead bodies of possible past wives. When Blue Beard returned from his trip he knew automatically that she disobeyed him and he was about to kill her because he felt that his control over her was lost.

Get help

This tale definitely informs the reader of the importance of getting help for domestic violence. Blue Beard's wife was about to get killed by husband but she called for help from her brothers who in turn ended up killing Blue Beard. Blue Beard's widow was able to inherit his wealth and marry a man who made her happy. Of course, victims of domestic violence should not kill their abusers but they should get help for no one can survive domestic violence without help.
